Are you listening to lies?
Have you ever heard a voice inside your head whisper:
*I’m not good enough
*I don’t have the time or the energy
*I need to have it all together and perfect like Jane’s life appears on Facebook or Instagram
*This piece of chocolate or cupcake is going to make me feel better
*I deserve a glass of wine or a new pair of shoes
*If my husband would pick up his dirty clothes off the floor or not say XYZ, I would love him more
*My teeth aren’t white enough
*My chest is too big or too small
*No one will love me for who I am
*Kids will make me happy
*I just need one more drink, cigarette or hit
*I can’t be forgiven for all the terrible things I’ve done in the past
*It’s too late to go back to school, to change careers, to write a book
*I’ve failed in the past, it didn’t work out the last time
*You only have one life here on this earth so live it up, do whatever feels good in the moment, whenever you want at the expense of anyone because your happiness is what matters most.
BIG FAT LIES
I’m here to tell you, these are all BIG FAT LIES and if you are listening to any of these things you need to stop it, right now! Now, I know it’s not that easy. You’ve maybe been in an abusive relationship physically or emotionally and have been told these things repeatedly. Even if you haven’t been in an unhealthy relationship, chances are you still find yourself listening to lies. I get it, I’ve been there myself and I’m here to tell you it doesn’t need be this way, in fact, it shouldn’t be this way and I’m going to unpack why. God did not intend for you to think or feel this way about yourself. It’s time to stop the nonsense and replace these lies with Truth.
Listening to these lies is actually a distraction. A distraction from being the person and doing the things your Creator wants you to do.
4 Ways to replace lies with Truth?
1 – You must fill your mind with Truth. Truth is found in God’s word. You become what you think, therefore fill your mind with pure, honest, real Truth.
“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things” Philippians 4:8
“Trust on the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding” Proverbs 3:5
“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things” Colossians 3:2
2 – You must be consistent with being in Truth. It’s not a one and done deal. It takes discipline, effort and forming a regular habit to soak in God’s word and renew the thoughts that enter your mind. Sound familiar? It’s not any different than forming healthy eating habits, right? Or practicing your game of golf or training for a marathon. It’s takes consistency, discipline and effort. Reading and hearing these Truths often will change the way you think.
“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline” 2 Timothy 1:7
“Be made new in the attitude of your minds;” Ephesians 4:23
3 – You must recognize the lies before they take hold on you. Stop the lies in their tracks, from entering and repeating themselves over and over in your mind. You ask how, Lisa? Literally, if you have a thought enter your mind that is not of the Creator you stop, speak out loud and say something along the lines of “No, I’m not listening to this” or “No, not today Satan”. Stop the thought in it’s tracks and redirect it. Follow it up with one or several of the truths listed below. Take every thought captive.
“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” 2 Corinthians 10:5
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” Proverbs 4:23
4 – You must have Faith. For me, listening to these lies can lead me down a path of worry and fear. Worry and fear are the absence of faith. It’s making up things that haven’t even happened yet. With faith, then there is no need to worry about the what if’s and the if only’s.
“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” Hebrews 11:1
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6
Here are just a few truths that I like to hold on to and be reminded of daily:
You are beautiful. There is no flaw in you. Song of Solomon 4:7
I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Psalm 139:13-14
You were created in the image of God. Genesis 1:26
God is pleased with how He made me. Genesis 1:31
I am God’s masterpiece. Ephesians 2:10
I am a child of God. John 1:12
I have been redeemed through God’s grace. Ephesians 1:7
I am a new creation in Christ. 2 Corinthians 5:17
The Lord renews my strength. Isaiah 40:29
I have not been given a spirit of fear but of power, love and self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7
I am created in Christ Jesus for good works. Ephesians 2:10
Christ died for me so that I may be forgiven and have a restored relationship with Him and spend eternity in Heaven. Ephesians 5:25
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13
“I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11
Post these reminders in your home, on your screen saver, in your car, at work. Be reminded of them often so you won’t be distracted from the person your Creator wants you to be!
